Apple sues HTC over trivial patents

Filed under: Silicon Valley — Chris Ey @ 7:03 pm

Apple sues HTC over 20 patents related to Android phones. I’m getting sick of trivial patents – and of Apple.

  1. Don’t forget the Nokia sued Apple twice last year in Oct and Dec – see “Nokia sues Apple (again)”. Oh and Kodak too: “Kodak sues Apple on claims of iPhone-related patent infringement”.

Aside from large companies with their own R&D, Apple and many other larger product companies (anyone with deep pockets) are also sued routinely by “patent trolls.” Here is just the latest example “Patent Troll Sues Apple Over Wireless Messaging Technology”.

  2. Exactly, hence my getting sick of trivial patents. For example, Kodak sued apple over this:

“The first suit against Apple covers the previewing of images, and processing them at different resolutions.”

This is what I would call trivial. Of course you are processing an image at full resolution while previewing it at lower resolution. Everything else doesn’t make any sense. Where’s the rocket science which is worth protecting?

I think the bar for stuff to be patentable is far too low!

Why should Kodak (or anybody) be able to receive money for or prevent the competition from doing trivial things which any person with an average IQ and an appropriate education can come up with in a couple of seconds?
